Metal-enhanced fluorescence: an emerging tool in biotechnology.

Over the past 15 years, fluorescence has become the dominant detection/sensing technology in medical diagnostics and biotechnology. Although fluorescence is a highly sensitive technique, where single molecules can readily be detected, there is still a drive for reduced detection limits. The detection of a fluorophore is usually limited by its quantum yield, autofluorescence of the samples and/o...

Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence from Chromium Nanodeposits

Over the last several years, our laboratory has described in detail the favorable effects of fluorophores in close proximity to metallic nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticles comprised of gold, silver, copper, and zinc show enhanced fluorescence intensities and photostabilities for fluorophores positioned within 10 nm of the particles. In this paper we show that, in addition to these metals, chrom...

Plasmonic technology: novel approach to ultrasensitive immunoassays.

At the Center for Fluorescence Spectroscopy, we have taken advantage of the favorable properties of surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) to improve fluorescence-based immunoassays. SPCE occurs when excited fluorophores near conducting metallic structures efficiently couple to surface plasmons. These surface plasmons, appearing as free electron oscillations in the metallic layer, produce elec...

Fluorescence Enhancement of Molecules Inside a Gold Nanomatryoshka

Metallic nanoparticles exhibiting plasmonic Fano resonances can provide large enhancements of their internal electric near field. Here we show that nanomatryoshkas, nanoparticles consisting of an Au core, an interstitial nanoscale SiO2 layer, and an Au shell layer, can selectively provide either a strong enhancement or a quenching of the spontaneous emission of fluorophores dispersed within the...

The plasmonic engineering of metal nanoparticles for enhanced fluorescence and Raman scattering.

We have investigated the effects of tuning the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of silver nanoparticles on the fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and Raman signal from nearby fluorophores. The presence of a metallic structure can alter the optical properties of a molecule by increasing the excitation field, and by modifying radiative and nonradiative decay mechanisms. By careful choi...
